Last weekend, my cousin and her boyfriend came to Seattle to visit me and explore the city. Little did she know, we were actually planning a surprise proposal!
Whenever we’re together, I always love doing my cousin’s hair (this honestly happens even if we’re just going out to get boba), so on the morning of the proposal, she thought nothing of me doing a braid crown and curling her hair. (I did take some extra precautions and used both gel and hairspray since I knew for sure we’d be taking a ton of photos.)
We spent the morning at Pike’s Place, first exploring the various food vendors and then eventually selecting a beautiful bouquet from one of the many flower stands set up for Mother’s Day weekend. Since her boyfriend and I had discussed finding a private location for him to actually propose, I recommended that we walk to Olympic Sculpture Park under the pretense of showing them where I typically run.
After finding a picturesque spot along the water, I suggested we take some photos for Instagram. I took several shots of my cousin alone, with her new bouquet, and then captured the last photo of this cute couple as girlfriend and boyfriend.
Since I always like to document the different hairstyles I try out on my friends and family, I told my cousin that I wanted to take some more photos of just her hair with the scenery in the background. This provided the perfect opportunity for her boyfriend to sneak up behind her and get down on one knee.
Although I’ve captured proms, graduations, and our own family reunions, this was definitely the most “high stakes” photos I’ve been asked to take. It was such an honor being able to see firsthand the genuine love and joy in this moment that is only partially documented in photos.
Following the actual proposal, we took the opportunity to turn the rest of the trip into an engagement shoot to commemorate the most special of weekends. Here are some photos from Olympic Sculpture Park, with my cousin’s bouquet, at Chihuly Garden and Glass, and at the Starbuck’s Reserve Roastery.
Thanks to the cousin and her fiancé for letting me be part of this amazing moment! (Hope you enjoyed your basic hairstyling-photo combination package :P)
